Chilled sour cherry soup
Sour cherry soup (hideg meggyleves) is a summertime favorite in Hungary. It has a sweet and refreshing taste. As the recipe notes, it’s best served with a dollop of sour cream.
Ingredients
1 1/2 pounds fresh sour pitted cherries or 1 can sour pitted cherries including juice
4 cups (960 ml) water
1/3 cup (75 ml) red wine
1/4 cup (55 grams) sugar
1/2 tsp salt
1 cinnamon stick
1 -2 cloves
1 lemon peel
sour cream for topping
Directions
In a large pot, add the water, wine, sugar, salt, cinnamon stick, cloves, lemon peel and bring to a boil.
Reduce heat to medium-low and simmer, stirring to dissolve the sugar, for about 1-2 minutes.
Add the cherries and simmer for 10 minutes or until cherries are soft. Remove the cinnamon stick, cloves, and lemon peel.
Remove pot from heat and ladle soup into a large bowl or container. Place into fridge and chill for 1 hour.
Stir a few tablespoons of sour cream into each bowl prior to serving.

Indeed.
Thanks for the reminder of Cherry Soup, I’d forgotten all about it! I have three sour cherry trees, and next year I’ll definitely introduce all my friends to one of my favorite childhood memories!
Where can I get sour cherries? My husband talks longingly of the sour cherry soup his mother used to make for him. I live in Syracuse, NY. and never see them in the stores or at farmer’s markets…can you recommend a website?
Hi Penelope.
Sour cherries are certainly harder to find here. You may want to try visiting a Polish or German grocery shop, they might have some in stock. They usually carry them in jars (some do have syrup in them as well). If you don’t like the extra sweetness, be sure to drain out the juice before using it.
As for online retailers, I know Zingerman’s carries them. Although, when I went to their website, it said they we’re all sold out. Although, maybe you can try contacting them to refill their stock.

Another good resource is Amazon. I’ve seen a few items there.

As well, you can try this retailer that I found while researching online.
