Hungary’s birthday cake
Every year a special birthday cake is prepared to celebrate St. Stephen’s Day, the country’s foundation on August 20th.
Confectioners from all over the country are encouraged to submit their best creations. Entrants range from master confectioners to ambitious bakers.
The cakes are judged by the National Guild of Hungarian Confectioners according to their flavor, creativity, and overall connection to Hungary.
This year the winner is an apple-poppy seed cake with vanilla filling made by Kokó Confectionery in Veszprém. For the first time, a sugar-free version was selected as well, an apple cake with gooseberry made by László Zila.
Both cakes can be sampled during the August 20th celebrations in the “Street of Hungarian Flavors” on August 19th and 20th at Clark Ádám tér.
